The famous Clock Tower in Star Ferry Pier Tsim Sha Tsui is one of the most visited monuments in Hong Kong.
Actually there is another historical tower in Tsim Sha Tsui, which is also a declared monument. However this tower is so hidden that even many locals do not know it exists.
The tower is located at Signal Hill Garden, close to K11 shopping mall or Sogo department store (next to Sheraton Hotel).
The tower is actually a Signal Tower at Blackhead Point which was built in 1907 by the Hong Kong Observaory to house a time-ball apparatus that was previously located in the nearby Round House of the Former Marine Police Headquarters. It was one of the two buildings constructed in HK for the purpose of signalling accurate time to mariners and the public.
From 1908 to 1920 the time ball at Signal Tower would drop once daily shortly before 1pm, then at exactly 1 pm it was automatically released and dropped to the foot of the mast so mariners could set their chronometers.
The tower originally had three storey and a storey was added in 1927 to enhance the Signal Tower’s visibility.
The Signal Tower opens every day between 9-11am & 4-6pm. Visitors can climb the stairs up to the second floor.
