Flip A Coin When You Visit Hong Kong
When people travel, one of the first things they need to do is to understand and recognise the bank notes and coins of that place. In Hong Kong, it can be extra fun when learning the coins.
Before 1997, when Hong Kong was still a British colony, there were coins of 5 dollars, 2 dollars, 1 dollar, 50 cents, 20 cents and 10 cents. Every 1, 2, 5 dollar coin has a Crowned Lion holding “The Pearl of the Orient” which referred to Hong Kong (government) at that time.
On the back there is a portrait of the Queen.
The production of colonial coins ceased in 1992. New design with Bauhinia flower, emblem of Hong Kong, was adopted in 1993 until now.
Old coins issued in 70s & 80s still remain legal nowadays. However they have become less common in Hong Kong after continuous withdrawal.
Therefore, when you are in Hong Kong, try checking the coins and see if you are lucky enough to collect the old coins as much as possible!
