Chun Yeung Street Market is a Little “China Town” in North Point Hong Kong

The market in Chun Yeung Street, North Point, indeed has so many stories to tell. Firstly, it is famously the only market where Hong Kong Trams would ride through it towards the North Point Terminus. It has been a popular photo spot among locals and tourists.

The market itself is already very interesting to visit. You will see people running around, sometimes not noticing the trams behind, feeling scary because of the big vehicle but a second later they would realise it is very slow and not that dangerous because the driver is very alert of people walking around the area, so rarely any accidents happen here.

You would notice there are a few street stalls on one side of the road selling dry goods like clothes and handbags where on the other side of the road (and behind the street stalls) are stores selling wet goods like meat, noodles, vegetables, well, wet market stuff.

Why little “China Town”? North Point is very famous of its populations of immigrants from Fukien and Shanghai of China last century. If you are lucky, you may hear uncles and aunties speaking Fukien (or Hokkien) and Shanghainese dialects in the market (if you understand the language). That’s why locals used to call it “Little Fukien” or “Little Shanghai”. Even “Chun Yeung Street” was named after a businessman from 1920s, Mr Kwok Chun Yeung, who was from Fukien and invested a lot in the development of the area.
