Starting from 25 January 2026, seated passengers on public transport and commercial vehicles in Hong Kong must wear a seat belt if one is fitted, including public and private buses (such as franchised buses and some coaches), and other vehicle types covered by the new road safety rules. If you’re visiting Hong Kong, the easiest way to remember this is simple: if you see a seat belt at your seat, buckle up right away.
This rule applies even if the vehicle is not newly registered—drivers and passengers occupying seats where seat belts are provided must wear them. Authorities have also stated that offenders may face a maximum fine of HK$5,000 and up to three months’ imprisonment, so it’s worth making it a habit, especially on longer routes where seat belts are more common.
Visitor tip: When you board, take two seconds to check the side of your seat for the lap belt, click it in, and enjoy the ride—small action, big safety upgrade for your Hong Kong trip.
