On a recent visit to the Station Rail Voyage exhibition at Hung Hom Station, I embarked on a memorable journey through Hong Kong’s rich railway history. Launched by the MTR Corporation to celebrate its 45th anniversary, this exhibition, located at Hung Hom Station, has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists, drawing over 70,000 visitors in its first eight months and relaunched to run until the end of 2025. It’s an experiential gallery that invites visitors to immerse themselves in railway stories, explore the workings behind the trains, and unravel the mysteries within, offering a comprehensive look at Hong Kong’s transport evolution.
Highlights
My visit was filled with nostalgia and excitement, particularly with the iconic trains on display. The “Yellow Head” train, a first-generation electric train from the Kowloon-Canton Railway (KCR) and part of the East Rail Line, stood out as a highlight. This train, famously featured in the Hong Kong classic movie God of Gambler, brought back memories of its cultural significance and allowed for some fantastic photo opportunities. I also enjoyed exploring the Mid-life Refurbishment (MLR) train, nicknamed “Fly Head,” which retired in 2022 after 40 years of service and features a farewell livery. Another gem was the newly added Kowloon-Canton Through Train (KTT), which ran cross-border services to Guangzhou until it was replaced by high-speed rail, adding a layer of historical depth to the exhibition.
The exhibition isn’t just about these trains; it’s a treasure trove of railway heritage. I saw the Diesel Electric Locomotive No 56 “I.B. Trevor” and various train components, each telling a story of Hong Kong’s railway milestones. The setting at Hung Hom Station, with its collection of retired trains and over 100 railway-related artifacts, provided a time-travel adventure, perfect for anyone curious about how Hong Kong’s transport system evolved.
Additional Elements
Beyond the trains, Station Rail Voyage offers an immersive experience that goes behind the scenes. Visitors can savor railway stories through interactive displays and historical artifacts, such as old tickets, uniforms, and equipment, showcasing the city’s metro development. It’s designed to be family-friendly, with opportunities to explore the inner workings of trains and understand the technical aspects of railway operations. The exhibition also highlights key milestones, like the merger of MTR and KCRC operations in 2007, and the expansion of the rail network to cover all 18 districts of Hong Kong, connecting to the airport and facilitating cross-border travel.
