Visiting Mummy in Easter: Will They Come Back to Life?

Easter is here, and while most kids are out hunting for chocolate eggs, my son and I decided to go on a slightly different kind of hunt—for mummies! We spent the holiday at the Hong Kong Palace Museum to catch the "Ancient Egypt Unveiled" exhibition.
The big question on my son's mind as we walked into Gallery 9: “Visiting mummies in Easter... will they come back to life?”
I told him that while they might not be waking up to join our Easter lunch, the stories they tell are very much alive.
The Treasures of the Pharaohs
This exhibition is a massive deal, featuring over 200 artifacts on loan. The scale is incredible, but what really caught my son’s eye were the cat mummies. Unlike the human mummies he expected, seeing these ancient feline protectors up close was a highlight. The way the ancient Egyptians honored their pets with such intricate wrappings and bronze statuettes is truly something to see.
Beyond the cats, don't miss the Gold Broad Collar and the massive sarcophagi. The detail in the carvings and the pigments that have survived thousands of years is mind-blown.
Coffee with a Touch of History: Starbucks at HKPM
After all that walking, we had to take a break at the new Starbucks on the G/F. This isn’t your average coffee shop; it’s a beautiful concept store that blends modern art with Chinese heritage. You’ll spot the unique Chinese calligraphy sign at the entrance and can enjoy some pretty amazing views of Victoria Harbour.
Don’t Forget: The Palace Museum Exhibits
Since you’re already there, you have to swing by the permanent galleries. While Egypt is the "special guest," the collection from the Palace Museum in Beijing is world-class. Seeing the Ming dynasty ceramics and the intricate Qing dynasty robes provides a fantastic contrast to the Egyptian treasures. It’s like a fast-track world history lesson in one afternoon.
The Must-Buy: Egypt 盲盒 (Blind Boxes)
If you follow this blog, you know I can’t leave a museum without checking the gift shop. This time, the museum really nailed it with the Ancient Egypt Blind Box series.
There are several cute plush designs, including pharaohs and various deities, but my son had his heart set on one thing: the Egypt Cat plush. He was nervous about the "blind" part, but we took a chance, and Bingo! He pulled the cat on the first try. It’s now officially his favorite souvenir, perfectly matching the cat mummies we just saw.
Plan Your Visit
If you haven't been yet, you still have plenty of time, but don't wait until the last minute. The Ancient Egypt Unveiled exhibition is running until August 31, 2026.
It’s the perfect family outing. Just remind the kids: the mummies stay in their cases... even the cats!
HK Guide Tip: Book your tickets online in advance. The special exhibitions tend to sell out fast on weekends and public holidays!
