Chung Yeung festival is a traditional Chinese festival. Many local Chinese would visit the graves of their ancestors to pay their respects.

Foreigners in Hong Kong may not be able to follow this tradition. However, there is another custom which they can do, which is hiking.

There are different stories about the origin of Chung Yeung Festival. Basically it is about a soothsayer advised a man to take his family to high ground for the ninth day of the ninth moon in order to escape from slaughter/ plague/ ghosts/ monsters (depending on the story). The man compiled and the next day they went back to the village and discovered that everyone in the village was dead because of slaughter/ plague/ ghosts/ monsters. Therefore the custom of Chung Yeung Festival has become hiking to somewhere high, in order to bring good luck.
